New walks guidebook kicks off summer walking season

Walkers at the launch of the new Big Tree Country booklet

Perthshire publisher Catkin Press launched its new walks guidebook at Auchingarrich Wildlife Centre.

Volume 3 of Experience Big Tree Country ~ 12 walks around Perthshire by Felicity Martin complements volumes 1 and 2 with a further selection of carefully researched routes, ranging from two to 14 miles in length.

Guests were treated to a locally produced light brunch of bacon croissants and strawberry scones from Auchnigarrich’s café, before being led on a four mile walk by Felicity. The route, part of the Crieff to Comrie walk from the book, has some remarkable trees and lovely views over Strathearn.

Perth and Kinross Countryside Trust is supporting the series of four walks guidebooks. Trust chairman Bob Ellis said: “Walkers will find this guide an inspiration for summer walking, taking them to places as varied as the seashore near Invergowrie to the cool depths of Rannoch Forest.

“All the walks are illustrated with Felicity’s maps and photographs, and she has included additional information that highlights the special aspects of Perthshire’s natural heritage that make it Big Tree Country.

“There are lots of walks for families and children, as well as longer walks that explore the wilder corners of Perth and Kinross.”

Author Felicity Martin added: “Both locals and visitors will find the guide contains plenty of walks that are new to them, since it includes many previously unpublished walks.

“Throughout the Experience Big Tree Country series I have tried to cover both iconic sites, where Perth and Kinross Countryside Trust has done much work to improve access and interpretation, and lesser known parts of our countryside.

The volumes of Experience Big Tree Country ~ 12 walks around Perthshire cost £3.95 each and are available at bookshops and visitor centres throughout Perthshire, and other outlets frequented by walkers such as outdoor shops, garden centres, farm shops and tearooms.
